Commanders social media wasn’t very high on Jayden Daniels. Most of the criticism of Daniels could be broken down into two categories, his size and non-football focused minutiae. In spite of that Daniels was the Commanders pick, and according to the organization there was never really any doubt.
Daniels weighed in at 210 lbs on his pro day, but his critics weren’t convinced, many of them believed he gamed his pro day. I just find this to be highly improbable, and if he gamed his weight, wouldn’t most quarterbacks game their weight? Regardless, the criticism just never made sense considering he played his SEC college career with the same frame and was just fine.
The minutiae took an even more bizarre turn when Commanders fans bashed Daniel’s agent and his mother. Apparently, the consensus was that Daniel’s agent Ron Butler was ruining his chances of being the second pick. Obviously this wasn’t the case and the speculation was bizarre at best, but I doubt NFL teams are in the habit of passing on first round draft picks because they don’t like an agent or his tweets.
Then there were the attacks on Daniel’s mother, according to the Washington Time’s Thom Loverro, she had an oversized presence at Arizona State University, and as a warning to the the Commanders Loverro published an article titled “LOVERRO: Commanders may need to weigh ‘mom factor’ on draft day” Now I understand this was a slow time of the year for sports, but I’m thinking that sports weren’t the only thing that was slow here. I’ve never heard of a mom taking over an NFL team, but maybe that’s a thing. While we found these arguments bizarre, they gained traction on the Commanders subreddit.
So where are we now? Jayden Daniels is set to start week one for the Commanders, and contrary to Loverro’s opinion, his mother hasn’t commandeered the Commander’s organization.
